Fire to me is a very special song. It holds a lot of meaning to me. It's when I "came of age," music wise, and attitude wise. Some of the riffs actually came to me in a dream.
When I was around 20 years old, I was in college and struggling with who I was, and I still didn't find "my sound," music wise.
I had written a bunch of riffs, but didn't have anything connected. I was going through quite a bit between college (picking my major) and finding myself.
I remember really being stressed out on many different levels - family, school not working out the way that I wanted to, and loads of other things that were going on. I had a lot on my mind one night. When I went to sleep, I had a dream like no other.
I was in my high school auditorium. I had spent so much time there in high school, since I was in chorus and was very active in the music department. Things were very much out of sorts in the auditorium though. I was tied to a stake, and next to me, two other people tied to stakes with their heads down, and their bodies beaten. They had given up on themselves and lacked the will to fight.
A man approached me from a group of people with a laurel wreath on his head, wearing a toga. Fingers were being pointed at me. The next thing that I know - the man took a knife and sliced into me, by a rib on my right side. He then sentenced me to burn at the stake.
I got so angry by that, I remember seeing myself rise as they were about to set me on fire. As I rose, I saw them look at me as I was now flying. It was then I heard this music - these riffs that I had never heard before. While the music played, I saw angels and demons going to war with each other. I got the feeling that they were fighting for my soul. I had woken up from that dream, and not too long after - some of the ideas of riffs and lyrics for Fire were born.
Fire is a song about "rising" above what people want you to be. You are your own person. Your soul is yours, and you will know when it's time to do what you need to do.
